about this blog

Posted by Cliodhna

Welcome to cliodhna’s wave. I am an irish artist living most of the time in mexico and you can see my art work on my website, just follow the link!

This blog is where I will talk about my art and share my stories with the world but also I intend to share ways in which i have has discovered how to be creative and let the inner voice flow. Practical things that I know also, like embroidery or fabric dying or just general observations on the nature of my journey as an artist. If anyone has any specific questions on how to do something ask me and if i can answer I will.

The name of the blog comes from an old irish mythology. Below is my favourite story about the name of this blog, taken straight from wikipedia

In some Irish mythology, Cliodhna (Cliodne, Clídna, Cliona, Cleena) was a goddess of love and beauty. She was said to have three brightly coloured birds who ate apples from an otherworldly tree and whose sweet song healed the sick. She left the otherworldly island of Tir Tairngire (”the land of promise”) to be with her mortal lover, Ciabhán, but drowned as she slept in Glandore harbour in County Cork: the tide there is known as Tonn Chlíodhna, “Cliodhna’s Wave”.

I have been told there are four waves around the coast of ireland, positioned north south east and west.

Tonn Cliodhna in glandore bay, Tonn Sceine in kenmare bay, Tonn Rudhraighe in dundrum bay and Tonn Tuaithe at the mouth of the bann. (if anyone knows how to put fada’s in please tell me!)

These waves are magical waves and protect ireland and there is also a story of the magical boundry of ireland being nine waves and the poet Amergin before he crossed the boundry with the Milesians spoke a word spell to the land to ensure his acceptance. I have wondered sometimes if this boundry didn’t come about because it was the furthest you could throw a spear or shoot an arrow maybe, so it was a political boundry also. There is a great book by Marie Heaney called ‘Over Nine Waves’ about irish mythology.
